Zeus is a domestic white turkey who was originally bred to be killed for meat. He arrived at RASTA at approximately 1 year of age and immediately captured everyone's heart.
Domestic white turkeys are the most commonly bred turkery for the slaughter industry, and they're selectively bred to grow quickly enough to reach slaughter weight within just 6 months. At almost four times that age, Zeus has some physical ailments starting to become apparent, but he'll get the best care possible at RASTA to ensure he's as healthy and happy as can be.
Zeus is a lucky guy - the farmers who bred him formed a bond with him, as he lived in the yard and would spend his days with them. Like all animals, Zeus is a unique individual and once the farmers knew him personally the decision to kill him became harder. Thanks to a couple of their friends who happened to be vegan, a home for him was arranged here at the sanctuary and he will live his full life here in peace.
