Meghan came to RASTA Sanctuary with a small flock of hens, all of whom had been rescued from a battery cage egg farm.

Consumers aren't told this, but most larger egg farms have multiple barns, and produce different eggs.  It's quite common for farms to have free-range, free-run, and battery cage hens all on the same grounds. As such, when people buy eggs of any kind, they're funding all forms - even the cruellest - of farming eggs.

When Meghan and her flock arrived, they had been in a barn for their entire lives without natural light, fresh air, or more than a foot of space each to move.  She had never stretched her wings or been able to express her natural tendencies in any way.

Meghan has flourished since arriving.  She has regrown the majority of her feathers, her skin has healed from the burning caused by ammonia in the air of the barn, and she has put on healthy weight.  She is a brilliant example of the strength and determination these unique and beautiful individuals embody.
