Karen came to RASTA Sanctuary after being surrendered to the Central Regional District pound in southern Vancouver Island. She was well loved by her former caregiver, but needed a new home.
Unfortunately it is a challenge to constantly be finding homes for hens, as they are bred in such vast numbers because humans want to eat their eggs. The majority of them are rehomed to places that are not sanctuaries, where they will continue to be exploited and may face slaughter when their production decreases after a couple of years. Forever homes for chickens are truly few and far between.
Karen is an incredibly intelligent and lively lady - she is always front and center and with her beautiful black feathers she's easy to spot! She's quite partial to El Diablo and El Mencho, and more than one rooster scuffle has taken place for her favour!
