Emma, along with her sister Sophie came to us in early May of 2017 from the Duncan SPCA.  Originally taken in from a hoarding situation from the Ladysmith area where dozens of intact potbelly pig were left to fend for themselves, Sophie and Emma came to us as pregnant fosters.  With the massive workload at the Sanctuary and the many animals already in our care, it was our intention to help the Duncan SPCA by taking one pregnant mother off their hands, but the two sisters had other plans.  When we arrived at the SPCA with a crate and prepared to load up one pig, both girls jumped in the crate together and rather than subject them to any more stress we decided to just take them both.

It took a tremendous amount of work to socialize both girls that were essentially wild and absolutely terrified of people.  Lucie, RASTA's founder set both girls up in the basement of her home where she worked with them extensively every single day and everntually was able to gain their trust.  Not a moment too soon as Emma's piglets were born just a few weeks later on May 30th 2017 and Sophie's babies were born the following month on June 20th 2017.

After both litters of piglets were born, it was determined that it was in the best interests of the two families to keep them all together rather than return them to the SPCA where they would be split up for adoption.  At that point, RASTA raised all the funds necessary to have both Sophie and Emma, along with their ten piglets; Sarah, Oscar, Olivia, Ringo, Midge, Huxley, Dudley, Josie, Juno, and Spanky spayed and neutered.
