Rescue And Sanctuary for Threatened Animals (R.A.S.T.A.) was founded  by Lucie Cerny in January 2001.

Named after her beloved late dog, R.A.S.T.A. is a Non-Profit Registered Charity devoted to Animal Rescue and Protection through Public Education and Advocacy.

Originating as Alberta’s Premier All Animal Rescue with a unique Non-Discriminatory approach (open to all animals regardless of breed, size, age or species) nearly a decade ago, R.A.S.T.A. began to recognize a desperate need for Farm Animal Refuge and Advocacy.  Over time, this inspiration led to R.A.S.T.A.’s eventual evolution to a Permanent Refuge for Abandoned and Abused Animals; Focusing on Farm Animal Rescue and Advocacy.

Located just minutes south of Calgary; The R.A.S.T.A. Sanctuary offers a Lifelong Safe Haven to several farm animals as well as other domestic animals rescued from unimaginably horrific circumstances.

Honoring education as the most valuable tool in rescue work, R.A.S.T.A. offers a unique one of a kind interactive experience to the public in visiting the many diverse species of rescued animals at the Sanctuary.  In doing so, R.A.S.T.A.’s goal is to inspire compassion for all animals with no distinction between breeds or species.

R.A.S.T.A. prides itself in being a No Kill and Cage-less Sanctuary, rather than the conventional approach of a shelter or a pound.  Our No Kill policy mandates that only terminally ill or fatally injured animals will ever undergo euthanasia, and our Cage-less philosophy allows our animals to enjoy freedom and socialization within their own, as well as among other species.

The R.A.S.T.A. Rescue operates on a Strict Volunteer Basis in that there are no paid positions on the board of directors or among any of the regular staff.  The Charity is maintained by a handful of devoted volunteers.

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons.  They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites, or women created for men”
